Background
Prior to her PhD candidature, Joanne was involved in research at the Centre in the chronic disease self-management field. She also completed her MPH through the Centre (supervised by Dr Richard Osborne) where she compared different assessment measures to evaluate participant outcomes from chronic disease self-management education programs.
The overall aim of the PhD is to advance both the conceptualisation and measurement of health literacy in Australia by exploring the nature, role and impact of health literacy on individuals with a view to developing and refining a conceptual framework of the association between health literacy and health outcomes.

- Patient equity and access issues to healthcare system
- Relationship between evidence based research and policy/political decision making
- Socio-economic determinants of health
