Dr Sharon Van Doornum
BiographyDr Van Doornum is a clinician-researcher who studied medicine at The University of Melbourne and undertook clinical training at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. After completing basic physician training she completed specialty training in the field of Rheumatology and also completed a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Epidemiology (Monash). Dr Van Doornum was awarded an NHMRC Post Graduate Scholarship to undertake a Doctorate of Medicine at The University of Melbourne. Upon completion of her doctorate, Dr Van Doornum was appointed senior lecturer in The University of Melbourne Department of Medicine (RMH/WH). Dr Van Doornum divides her time between clinical research and public hospital service as a consultant rheumatologist at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. Dr Van Doornum has been awarded a number of fellowships and grants for her research from organizations including the Victor Hurley Research Trust (2000), CVL Pfizer Research Fund (2001), The Arthritis Foundation of Australia (2001, 2004, 2006),The Heart Foundation (2005) and The Royal Australian College of Physicians (2004, 2007). Dr Van Doornum has also been awarded a number of traveling fellowships including a Preceptorship in Advanced Rheumatology (Boston 2002) and the Melbourne-Boston Exchange Fellowship (2005). Dr Van Doornum’s research has published in international peer-reviewed journals and she has been an invited speaker at Australian and international rheumatology conferences. She has reviewed manuscripts for several international journals, and has been an assessor for the NHMRC Project Grants scheme.
Research InterestsDr Van Doornum’s research program is directed towards improving management of cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular disease in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases, with the ultimate goal of reducing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in these patients. Attaining this goal will require a combination of effective screening, implementation of best practice for control of cardiovascular risk factors, identification of effective screening tests for sub-clinical cardiovascular disease, better understanding of the role of disease activity and medications in atherosclerosis pathogenesis and effective treatment of incident cardiovascular events.
